Built in 1913 as a six-unit luxury apartment building, the Windsor underwent a few renovations before it became an impressive 46-room hotel in 1986. Much of the original architecture has remained; even the lobby kept its curved Art Deco counters, moldings and floor tiles. Rooms come equipped with private bathrooms, direct-dial phones, digital alarm clocks, cable TV with free HBO, daily maid service and 24-hour copy/fax service. Guests are offered a complimentary expanded continental breakfast and daily newspaper as well as snacks and a free glass of sherry, coffee or tea during the evening. Bells and whistles notwithstanding, the best thing about the Windsor is the location, which allows easy access to museums, monuments, Washington's business district and a variety of restaurants.
