Restaurateur Jeff Black earned a reputation for quality food with Black's Bar and Kitchen, Addie's and Black Market in Maryland. In December 2004, he expanded his empire into the District with Black Salt, a combination seafood restaurant and market. The lively restaurant, located in the residential western corner of the city, boasts a raw bar, a small-plates menu and an open kitchen, where chefs take advantage of the wood-burning grill and smoker to turn out flavorful seafood dishes. Start out with an order of wood-grilled sardines, crisp fried calamari or creamy shrimp bisque. You'll find mussels served five ways and a variety of creative seafood stews. Among the entrees, monkfish arrives swathed in prosciutto, and pan-seared diver scallops are accented with crawfish butter. And don't forget dessert, which is anything but an afterthought with choices such as a key lime bombe, chocolate peanut butter crunch cake and apple cranberry bread pudding. If eating out is not on the agenda, stop in the fish market where you'll find a fresh selection of fish and shellfish, such as Nantucket Bay scallops, baby octopus, Atlantic salmon and Chesapeake Bay lump crabmeat. Not sure how to choose? The market's knowledgeable staff is happy to help. -- Amanda McClements

Great restaurant!

Black Salt was a great restaurant to go to celebrate a special occasion. Servers were very attentive, knowledgable, and frequently gave recommendations in regards to the food and wine. We ordered mussells for an appetizer and they were fantastic. I wish I could have ordered them as a main meal because they were far superior to my fish entree (which was decent, but not outstanding). Make sure to save room for dessert, because they all looked amazing!

Best Seafood in the City

Been to blacksalt four times now and have been nothing but impressed with each visit. The menu is fresh, bold and ambitious with around 6-8 new specials each time we went. Most regular menu items have also changed throughout our visits. The wine list is packed with selections from off the beaten path, small acreage wineries. The restaurant always seems full and fast-paced. My family's most recent visit was on a sleepy late August Wednesday evening, and we were amazed to see almost every table full around 6:30. If you are looking for a dark and quiet restaurant, i would not choose blacksalt. Our first time at the restaurant a suited host walked my wife across the front of the kitchen to a restroom in a back hallway. Its fun to be able to see and hear the chefs preparing our food. The staff is friendly and accommodating for our seven year old, during our last visit they even adapted a gnocci appetizer for him. Any food or wine questions we asked were thoroughly answered by our spirited college aged waiter. My seafood timid wife ended up with food she wouldn't normally order, but quickly loved. We ordered some appetizers and mussels to share that were brought out separately and thoughtfully divided in half. The grilled and stuffed bronzino entree is a must-have. I highly recommend blacksalt to anyone looking for an adventurous seafood meal. They cook fish perfectly, and the atmosphere (opened kitchen) is entertaining.

far from the tourist path

This was a cute place to visit and the fis was fabulous, which is hard to find in Washington. It really out of the way. It was very crowded and lively feeling. We thought the service was awful, we asked for lemon for our water 3 times. We asked for oil and balsamic 3 times. The dessert choicces were limited. I was sent here from newnewyorker.com and they were pretty on target about the place. I did ask for something with very fresh fish and out of the way. I got it, jut not the lemons..
