From the clean-cut bartenders to the exposed brick walls, high ceiling, generous wood bar and brass rails, JR's feels comfortable, if somewhat conservative. The bar's casual atmosphere makes JR's an easy and relatively un-intimidating place to drop in for a drink. The bar often becomes SRO on the weekends and except for a smattering of barstools, there aren't many places to sit. This suits the mostly male crowd who come here to mill around, check each other out, and bump into someone new. A loft with a pool table at the rear of the bar offers some respite from the scene below. If the many handsome men at JR's aren't mesmerizing enough there are always the videos. A booth is perched high over the bar entrance and houses a VJ who mixes videos that play on multiple screens throughout the bar. Videos generally feature pop song remixes and contribute to the usually loud and lively scene.

People who bash JR's usually work in other bars. It is a normal bar you would be able to take your parents in and not be embaressed to do so. Bartenders Are friendly and people come to jr's to meet friends before they go anywhere else. It is mostly men who range from 21 to 50. hot cute guys are always around. as for the being crowded? do you really want to go to an empty bar? they must be doing somethign right if there always crowded. shows how much the peopel who ******* know. they are probably the peopel who got kicked out or are over pretentious

I have to contradict the comment regarding the mean bartenders to straight women. As a straight married woman, I've had no problems with the bartenders, bar backs all the way up to the manager. All of them have been nothing but respectful and polite. I enjoy the people and atmosphere at JR's and look forward to going when the opportunity arises. :)

the bartender at jr's was mean and discriminated against me - i was a straight female but he would serve my gay male friends but not me - my friends and i will NOT return (especially since i was paying) - there are MUCH BETTER GAY BARS IN DC - DUPLEX DINER, COBALT, HALO !!!!!!!

The gay community has always sought acceptance by society and JR's success is that it stacks up against any straight traditional bar. Great space, glorius turn of the century style saloon, lots of wood, great drinks, personable and knowledgeable bartenders who hold the attitude in check. Terrific happy-hour specials and regular theme nights to appeal to a variety of tastes. Jrs does it well and has done it this way for over 20 years!
