The Hoyt's Potomac Yard 16 is a big, shiny, new multi-plex in the Potomac Yard shopping center on Route 1 in Alexandria (which means there are lots of stores to browse through before or after your movie). It makes for very pleasant movie-going, with plenty of free parking, a spacious lobby, a long concession area with numerous (although often rude) cashiers, and large, sparkling clean bathrooms. The seats just might be the best in the area; besides being stadium seating, the plush, comfy chairs rock. The 16 screening rooms range in size from 400 seats to 150. The only drawbacks we came up with: it's not Metro-accessible and the prices are pretty steep. Admission is the highest in the area at $8.25 for evening shows and $6.00 for matinees ($5.50 for seniors and children under 12). At the concession stand, a small soda will set you back $3.00. There is an interesting snack selection, though, including baked goods, which you don't often find in movie theaters. Hoyt's offers advance ticket sales by credit card as well as gift certificates. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can even have valet parking for $3.00. - MS
