The smell of wood-burning barbecue on Wisconsin Avenue pulls you to the door. Once inside, Rocklands is barbecue through and through. The menu focuses on four primary entrees: barbecue pork spare ribs, baby-back ribs, beef ribs and barbecue chicken. But to the delight of vegetarians, the grilled fish and grilled vegetable entrees make good use of the red oak and hickory wood stove. There are plenty of the standard barbecue side dishes -- mashed potatoes, barbecue beans, coleslaw and potato salad -- all made fresh with Rocklands' hickory-flavored flair. Mostly a takeout joint, Rocklands includes some counter seating for about a dozen eat-in customers. While you're waiting for your order, keep yourself entertained with the bowls of unshelled roasted peanuts and the two "walls of fire" (one with gourmet hot sauces to try and the other with sauces to buy). Considered by many as a Cathedral neighborhood fixture, Rocklands is equally popular for its catering. -- Robbin Zeff

Menu variety is terrific and changew often enough to bring you back to see what's new. Catering services are excellent for a large of small affair. Food arrives hot and on time, staffing is competent and knowledgable.
