not what it used to be

This used to be the best tempura I have ever had (2003) ...very very light and ungreasy. Sushi always fresh, delicate. Lunch prices are a terrific value, and wait staff alwasy prompt and attentive if not somewhat reserved per Asian way. One of my favorite restaurants in Landmark area. But it is now under new management and is quite average. The tempura is not as good and the size of the sushi has shrunk. Also the service is not as good. The sparkle has gone out of the place. 1/13/3006

I went to Akasaka upon recommendation of the Washingtonian in their issue titled "Cheap Eats." They raved about the food, service and atmosphere. While the atmosphere was attractive,(except for the fact that it is located in an unattractive mini-mall), the service was TERRIBLE. Waitresses just stood there looking at our leftover fish and dirty dishes on our table after we were finished. They didn't come over to clear them or ask us if we wanted anything else because THEY were not our waitress. The food was mostly fresh, but the tuna was so stringy and chewy, it was really very bad. The pieces were cut the thinnest I've ever seen pieces be cut. I just thought it was flat out bad, would never go back, and would never return.

Leon G. Rus's Review

I lived for three years in Japan and have tried numerous Japanese restaurants throughout the country. It still amazes me that some of the best places are like Akasaka. Out of the way, never expecting to find good food here. I have to say the sushi here is as good as I've had anywhere in the U.S. And, I've been told that Sushi-ko in DC is the best in the area. I've eaten there too, and Akasaka puts them to shame. Looking for a place with great sushi at a great price? Akasaka is it. 3 Stars! Would be four but I've never given 4 stars to any place.
