One of Washington's most adored places to dine sits tucked away in the hills of Great Falls, Va. A favorite of locals year after year, the unpretentious French restaurant seems completely unaffected by its countless awards. The outside is quaint and romantically lit with small, white lights. Step inside and you'll immediately be set at ease by the cozy provincial interior. The cuisine is traditionally Alsatian and changes with the seasons. Chef Jacques Haeringer (the son of owner and original chef, Francois) uses mostly local ingredients to ensure freshness, but also incorporates European delicacies that are flown in daily. For example, you might find fresh Dover sole and Alsatian sausage juxtaposed with Virginia ham and Shenandoah rainbow trout on a menu that seems to have a bit of everything. The staff is attentive but not intrusive, knowledgeable but not overbearing; they endure proposals and birthdays nightly but never seem too jaded to make yours special. Perhaps the best indicator of the restaurant's popularity among Washington's well-heeled diners: Reservations must be made exactly four weeks in advance. -- Nick Freshman

Just a great place to dine
By TraGre on 07/25/2008
It is the ultimate as far as my family is concerned. It is the "go to" place when you feel like having the very best in food and ambiance. Be sure to try their deserts.

On my 27th anniversary I asked for a recommedation for a romantice French restaurant and the same name kept coming up, Chez Francois L" Auburge. After a 70 minute drive thru rush hour traffic, my wife and I arrived at a unassuming building in the middle of Great Falls. I asked the young man who was working in the parking lot was it worth the drive, he just smiled and waved towards the door. Just before opening the door I was met by wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen. After taking my wife's coat were escorted to out table. The interior was lovely and very cozy and quaint. The only complaint I had for the night was the chair was about the most uncomfortable I had ever set in. Of course this was my fault for being circumnavigationally challenged. Our waiter and everyone that came to the table were most attentive, the food excellent and the portions generous for a French restaurant. We finished the evening with Baked Alaska and coffee. And contray to everything I have read about reservatiions, I called on a Tuesday and got a table for the folowing Friday.

No Comparison

This entire "review" is an absolute sham. Morton's is the best seakhouse, Arties is the best brunch, and L'Auberge is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best in French dining in the Washington, DC area. No Comparison. If you are looking for a perfect evening for two in an idylic setting, and don't mind opening up the check book, go to Chez Francios. Period.
