Unreasonably Inflexible
By rg00575 on 11/25/2007
A friend took us to Makoto several years ago and we really enjoyed it. We decided to go back during a recent trip to D.C., but were denied service simply because we were wearing jeans! I have nothing against dress codes, but they need to be consistently enforced (no one questioned our jeans two years ago). A little flexibility would also be nice. We explained to the hostess that we were in town from the West Coast and had spent a fair amount of time looking for the restaurant online because we wanted to come back again, but she refused to budge. The situation was handled so poorly that we would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, no matter how good the food!

Best Japanese food in DC
By dinoue on 06/29/2005
This is very authentic Japanese food. Speaking from 5 years experience as a sushi chef serving customers that included executives from the Honda plant near Columbus, OH, this is excellent Japanese food as a total package. It is not a place to go if you just want sushi, it is best for the kaiseki style meal as a complete package. This is where you go to eat stuff you can't or don't want to go to the trouble to prepare at home. Pity they discontinued the yakitori menu.

one word: WOW
By effing on 05/18/2005
I'm reluctant to properly sing the praises of Makoto. I don't want others to find out about it. Its hard enough to get a table. A special occasion destination. Service, food, atmosphere through the roof. I can't wait until my next visit!

MRGSIII's Makoto experience
By mrgsiii on 10/20/2004
A friend introduced me to Makoto about two years ago. I can honestly say that it changed my outlook on Sushi completely. Almost every other Sushi place in the city pails in comparison. The bar was raised and there are no challengers. Warning it is easy to run up a bill of $250 for two people but it is worth every penny.
