Rate and Write a Review Established in 1856, Old Ebbitt Grill is one of the oldest institutions in Washington, DC. Back in the day, it was a favorite hangout for U.S. Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Harding and Theodore Roosevelt. But even if you don't give a hoot about history, it's worth a trip to the Old Ebbitt Grill for the food and insider atmosphere. Power breakfasts start off the morning, with French toast and omelets. Later in the day, look for menu highlights like trout Parmesan (fresh Virginia trout dipped in egg batter and Parmesan cheese, flash-fried and topped with hollandaise sauce) and bourbon walnut pie (cookie batter folded with chocolate morsels, walnuts and bourbon, baked in a pie shell, served warm with vanilla ice cream). Oyster lovers are in luck at Old Ebbitt; it has the largest selection of oysters in Washington. Belly up to the bar at happy hour, when oysters are discounted. With its location in proximity to the White House and museums on the National Mall, this upscale saloon/restaurant draws a mixed clientele of tourists, local lobbyists and 'West Wing' types. -- Jon Bowen
